This week, 15-21 December 2008, Alfred Brendel is playing two final concerts at the Musikverein before retiring from the concert stage. He is choosing to play Mozart.
The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians says Brendel is: 'capable of winning through to that "second simplicity" where the listener has the sensation of music not being played, but happening by itself'.
There is unusual grace in that comment and true appreciation of the dedication, hard work and humility of the human being who can do it. Bravo Mr Brendel from the bottom of my Mozartian ears.
